Everglades

Sawgrass horizons, mangrove waterways and wildlife a day trip from the Gulf Coast.

Get to know Everglades

Things to do in Everglades, Florida

The Everglades is a vast wetland of sawgrass prairie, cypress swamp and mangrove islands stretching across the southern tip of Florida. From our Southwest Florida homes it makes a memorable day trip along US 41, the Tamiami Trail. Plan around one or two areas, start early, and check park notices before you leave, since facilities and access change with the seasons and water levels.

Places to explore

01

Gulf Coast area, Everglades National Park

The park's western gateway near Everglades City leads into the Ten Thousand Islands, a maze of mangrove waterways. Check the National Park Service for current visitor-center status and boat-tour arrangements before going.

02

Shark Valley

A paved loop into the sawgrass with an observation tower, explored by tram, bicycle or on foot. Wildlife such as alligators and wading birds is common but never guaranteed; keep a safe distance and never feed animals.

Visitor information

03

Big Cypress National Preserve

Stop at the Oasis or Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center along the Tamiami Trail for boardwalk views and scenic drives. Review the preserve's current road and trail conditions first.

04

Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park

Beaches & outdoors

Bring water, sun protection and insect repellent, especially in the wetter summer months. Stay on marked trails and boardwalks, keep at least 15 feet from alligators, and move to a vehicle or building during lightning. Choose licensed operators for any boat or airboat outing and confirm their safety arrangements directly.

Families & rainy days

Short boardwalks and the Shark Valley tram can suit families better than long hikes. Keep children close near water, plan for heat, and keep the day short enough to enjoy rather than rushing between stops.

Plan your visit

  • Allow plenty of driving time: the Everglades entrances are spread out, and Shark Valley is on the far side from Everglades City.
  • Check National Park Service and preserve notices for hours, fees, closures and water conditions before leaving.
  • Fill up on fuel and bring snacks, as services along the Tamiami Trail are limited.
